Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Motorsports
UNC Charlotte
Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science

Position #004762

THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING SCIENCE AT UNC CHARLOTTE is currently seeking candidates for an open-track faculty position (rank and track depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate) in the general area of motorsports/automotive engineering. Although preference will be given to candidates with expertise in aerodynamics or vehicle dynamics and simulation, strong candidates with expertise in other areas, such as IC engines, emission and heat recovery, conventional/hybrid vehicle propulsion systems and combustion/powertrain controls, will be considered as well.

The successful candidate should be committed to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervising undergraduate capstone projects and graduate theses/dissertations. In addition, it is expected that the successful candidate will establish relationships with local and national industrial partners, publish in leading research journals, and establish a strong externally-funded research program. Applicants must have an earned PhD in mechanical engineering. Experience with motorsports and/or automotive industries, preferably with NASCAR Cup race-car or Formula 1 race teams, is desired for this position and preference will be given to candidates at any rank with established industrial ties. To be considered for Associate Professor or Professor, the applicant should demonstrate, in addition to strong teaching and research accomplishments/track-records, either (a) a history of securing external funding, or (b) at least 12 years of post-PhD work experience in automotive/motorsports industry, of which at least 5 years as a Technical Director or above. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level should demonstrate the potential for securing external funding and a strong commitment to teaching. All candidates should explicitly describe how they envision contributing to the department, college, and university diversity initiatives.

The anticipated starting date for this position is August 2020. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until a selection has been made. For full consideration, please submit an online application/profile at https://jobs.uncc.edu, position #004762. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Candidates are requested to attach the following documents with their electronic submission: a vita, a statement of research and teaching interests, and full contact information for 3 references. Finalists will be asked to forward official transcripts and other supportive materials as requested by the search committee. For additional information, contact Dr. Edward Morse (emorse@uncc.edu), Chair of the Search Committee.
