Tenure Track Position in Mechanical Engineering with Emphasis on Robotics

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in mechanical engineering. Responsibilities include teaching engineering courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, conducting research in engineering, developing externally funded research programs, and producing archival publications in leading scholarly journals. A PhD in mechanical engineering or a related field is required at the time of appointment.

The Tickle College of Engineering (tickle.utk.edu) is undergoing a period of substantial growth in both physical infrastructure and research expenditures as it seeks to become a Top 25 ranked public institution. The college presently has seven departments with 186 faculty members, 3,393 undergraduates and 1,155 graduate students. The department (mabe.utk.edu) currently has 40 tenured/tenure track faculty members and enrolls some 1,331 undergraduate and 182 graduate students. Research expenditures in the department exceed $15M per year.

Primary consideration will be given to those with capabilities and interests in robotics, particularly at the intersection between robotics/automation and advanced/additive manufacturing. Research experience with industrial scale systems and equipment is desirable. The department has established strong cores in robotics, advanced, and additive manufacturing, including a close working relationship with the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ornl.gov/facility/mdf). The MDF carries out research in emerging subtractive, additive, and hybrid manufacturing technologies; it provides physical and virtual tools from design to evaluation for implementing new technologies and optimizing essential manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will have extensive opportunities to collaborate with MDF researchers.

Review of applications will begin January 6, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date of the new position is August 1, 2020. Salary is commensurate with the position and experience of the applicant. Applications must include (1) a concise letter of intent outlining the applicant’s research and teaching goals and objectives; (2) a comprehensive curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of research and teaching interests; and (4) the names, addresses, and telephone numbers for at least five references. Apply online at: https://tiny.utk.edu/ajo-14845

Inquiries should be addressed to the search chair, Dr. Bill Hamel, at: mabe2020id50034012@utk.edu
