Job Description
GTRI is searching for a proven leader with extensive research experience to head the Threat Analysis Branch (TAB) in the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research (CIPHER) Lab. TAB focuses on providing expert analysis and rapid prototyping of cybersecurity tools, including gathering, organizing, analyzing, and understanding cyber threat intelligence data. Research includes developing techniques in analysis, visualization, testing, and representation of all aspects of network cybersecurity; applying new and emerging techniques to the open-source cyber intelligence domain; and maintaining a data and analysis infrastructure to provide unique insights into the evolution of techniques in malware design and network security.
TAB is a unit of 10 full-time researchers. Given the rapid growth and dynamic environment of cyber-security threats, the Threat Analysis Branch is expected to see the opportunity for substantial growth. The responsibilities of the Branch Head are divided between leadership and independent research. It is expected that the leadership responsibilities of this position will be 25% time, with the other 75% coverage coming from externally funded research programs. The position is based at GTRI facilities in Midtown Atlanta, GA. Researchers at GTRI are research faculty at Georgia Tech.
Management duties include:
- Development of strategic vision and execution plan for TAB in conjunction with the Laboratory and Directorate Leadership,
- Oversight of branch program and operational activities,
- Leading contract development activities and interfacing with sponsors,
- Personnel management including hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, career development, etc.,
- Management of budgets, resources, and compliance with policies and procedures,
Research duties include:
- Lead agile team of software security researchers in the discovery, analysis, and capability integration for the cyber intelligence operations community,
- Identify new opportunities to expand our network cybersecurity sponsor base,
- Research activities supporting sponsored projects,
- Program management of specific research projects,
- Development and execution of internal research and development programs supporting the division strategic vision,
- Development of proposals for new research efforts

Education & Length of Experience
Research Engineer/Scientist II
- A Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
- A Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
- A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study .
Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate
- A Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
- A Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
- A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.
Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Associate
- A Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
- A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience after the B.S. degree and a M.S. or Ph.D. in a related field
- Experience in:
- Research and development, strategic planning, sponsor engagement, and program/ project management
- program development, proposal generation, and sponsor engagement,
- leading research projects and managing researchers,
- Demonstrated technical achievements in the relevant technical domains,
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Some personnel management experience
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
