University Professorship – salary grade W3
in the field of "Programming Languages".

Faculty IV 
Reference number: IV-427/20 (starting at the earliest possible / unlimited / closing date for applications 31/10/2020)

Working field: Research and teaching in the field of programming languages with focus on at least two of the following areas: 

  • Automatic debugging and automatic parallelization up to high-performance computing.
  • Data-centric programming with applications in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Communication-based systems in the context of functional and object-oriented programming.
  • Programming models and environments for massively parallel and distributed / decentralized systems, possibly with visions towards new challenges such as Blockchain and Quantum Computing.
  • Compiler construction, e.g., compiler optimization using methods and insights from machine learning and artificial intelligence.
  • Safety-critical software and compilation: formal methods in combination with various security models and attack scenarios.

Research should be conducted in a suitable combination of theoretical and practical empirical studies. Close cooperation is expected with the adjacent fields of the faculty, especially Software and Embedded Systems Engineering, Software and Business Engineering, Architecture of Embedded Systems, Distributed Open Systems, Database Systems and Information Management, Information Systems Engineering, Complex and Distributed IT Systems, and Models and Theory of Distributed Systems as well as cooperation with the diverse Berlin research landscape (and beyond).

Teaching activities include courses on basic and advanced topics in the area of programming languages, programming, and compiler construction. This includes lectures as well as projects, internships and seminars. Lectures are to be included in both the Bachelor's and Master's programs of the Faculty IV – Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Requirements

Candidates must fulfill the requirements for appointment at the professor level in compliance with § 100 BerlHG (Berlin Higher Education Act), including a completed university degree, qualified achievements in research (Ph.D.), post-doctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or equivalent qualification and teaching qualifications, represented or proven by a teaching portfolio (more information on this on the TUB website, direct access 144242). Furthermore expected is a proven expertise in theoretical and practical-empirical research and an outstanding list of publications related to some of the listed topics; the assumption of responsibility for leadership and management of a chair and its employees and the ability to promote young talent and women are just as much a prerequisite as gender and diversity competence and active commitment to knowledge and technology transfer and science communication. The willingness to offer teaching in German as well as in English is also a prerequisite. Very good English language skills are required. The willingness to learn German is expected from non-German-speaking applicants.
