Vacuum Engineer for Z Machine (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a Vacuum Engineer to provide technical leadership over vacuum system research and development efforts on the Z Machine and other advanced pulsed power facilities. The candidate will work with both Sandia and external collaborators to design, test, and commission vacuum systems required to enable new experimental capabilities on the world class 30 million Ampere Z Machine. http://www.sandia.gov/z-machine/

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop advanced capabilities to understand vacuum conditions relevant to pulsed-power-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and dynamic material properties (DMP) experiments.
  • Work with the Z Facility Operations Team to transfer innovative capabilities onto the Z Machine.
  • Design vacuum systems using standard engineering tools (CREO, SolidWorks).
  • Collaborate with the Sandia cryogenic, gas fill, and tritium subject matter experts and the Z Facility Operations Team to plan and execute experiments.
  • Plan and guide multi-year development projects within a rapidly evolving R&D environment.
  • Develop new characterization tools and/or diagnostics to improve our understanding of the vacuum system in Z experiments.
  • Use computational tools to understand vacuum performance in complex geometries.
  • Travel occasionally (e.g. 3 weeks per year) for joint experiments, workshops, and to present material at project meetings or scientific conferences.

  • BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field a or BS and four years' experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


  • Experience with engineering and designing hardware using standard engineering tool (CREO, SolidWorks), and advanced engineering tools like ABAQUS
  • Experience modeling of vacuum systems
  • Strong electro-mechanical skills such as the ability to use varied calibration and diagnostic instruments in light labs and at small facilities, and in supporting the setup of experimental equipment such as electronics, vacuum chambers, and data acquisition systems
  • Highly self-motivated, adaptable to change, and an excellent work ethic suited to making rapid progress through independently directed work
  • Experience with electromechanical actuation/automation.
  • An active DOE L or Q clearance or active transferrable clearance with another US government agency, e.g. DOD Secret or Top Secret

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
