We have an opening for a Virtualization Systems Engineer. You will be responsible for architecting and managing virtualization infrastructures in a heterogeneous enterprise environment to solve a variety of complex technical problems. This position is within the Enterprise Infrastructure Services Division in the Computing Directorate, supporting the Livermore Information Technology (LivIT) program.This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Manage a private cloud virtualization environment that spans three NNSA sites to provide IaaS and PaaS services to enterprise collaboration tool suites, databases, applications, services, servers, and core infrastructure componentry.
- Manage enterprise virtual environments on premises (VMware & Azure Stack), and Cloud infrastructures including AWS and Azure.
- Perform moderately complex Linux installations, configurations, upgrades and ongoing maintenance activities for the virtual environments infrastructures and services.
- Develop custom programmatic solutions (e.g. Shell scripting, Python, etc.) for automating and orchestrating configuration changes, standard maintenance activities, data protection service integration, security compliance, and other required software and utilities.
- Leverage standard orchestration/automation utilities (e.g. Ansible, Puppet/Chef infrastructure, etc.) for distributing, validating, and enforcing standard configurations, supporting patching, and pushing out new required software.
- Implement, support, and maintain tools such as Icinga, and other performance/monitoring technologies to monitor and support systems and associated SLAs.
- Collaborate with management, customers, and team members to evaluate and recommend procurements of hardware and software, and provide guidance to end users for the design of their computing environments and technical areas.
- Satisfy security and systems administration policy requirements such as vulnerability remediation, and system build requirements and perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Manage multiple advanced parallel tasks and priorities of customers and stakeholders to ensure deadlines are met, while leveraging team members skills.
- Apply in-depth technical expertise to solve complex technical problems and develop solutions using judgment in determining methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria.
- Develop tools and procedures to facilitate complex automation efforts as well as cross-platform/environment automation solutions.
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Business Administration with a concentration in Computer - Information Systems, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive, multi-year experience in architecting, designing, and operationally managing enterprise virtualization services across sites leveraging enterprise solutions (Such as Azure Stack, VMware or OVM) in support of stringent SLA agreements that stipulate narrow outage windows.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience performing Linux system administration in a complex environment, including tasks such as installation, performance tuning, networking, security policy enforcement, troubleshooting, monitoring, backup/archiving and hardware replacement, and applying and enforcing NIST or STIG security compliance.
- Proficient, hands-on experience with technologies such as: SPLUNK, Tenable Security Scanner, Ansible, Puppet, Chef or equivalent, Icinga, RHEL 7/8 and/or RHN Satellite, PKI authentications, DevOps experience automating deployment of applications, VMWare or Azure Virtualization, AWS or Azure cloud services, BIND/DNS Scripting with CSH/BASH, or Python.
- Broad experience interacting with computer security personnel to provide input to computer security plans, ensuring computer security compliance, monitoring systems for general health, security incidents, and other events, and developing security configurations that meet cyber requirements.
- Comprehensive analytical skills necessary to analyze moderately complex systems and networks.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to work on a 24x7 rotational schedule with the ability secure and maintain a Q level security clearance.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge of and significant experience in the above technical languages, concepts, or constructs.
- Significant experience with security targets/configuration standards (CIS, STIGs or equivalent)
- Professional Certifications (e.g., VMware VCA, Azure or VCP-DCV, CompTIA A+, RedHat RHCSA, Ansible, AWS).

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
