W80-4 Lead Design Engineer (Experienced)

We are seeking a hardworking Lead Design Engineer, with a background in mechanical, electrical, systems, or related engineering field, to join the W80-4 System Team! In this role, you will lead the overall W80-4 warhead design and development effort. An understanding of NNSAs 6.X process and Sandias Realize Product Procedures (RPPs) is essential for this role. The primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing technical leadership to a team of highly qualified technical engineers working on a complex systems engineering project; answering technical questions related to the architectural design of a nuclear weapon; assisting in understanding and maturing requirements; assisting with qualification, and coordination with other technical leads in component PRTs. In addition, the Lead Design Engineer will engage with the W80-4 project management team to develop schedules, cost projections, and variance reporting for all systems engineering activities in Phase 6.3 and beyond. The Lead Design Engineer partners closely with the Lead Engineers at LLNL, KCNSC, and NNSA on all warhead topics. You must have a multidisciplinary perspective with an innate curiosity to learn outside of your existing knowledge base. Having the capability to communicate optimally is a critical element for this position due to the collaborative nature of the role. ** On any given day, you may be called to:**

+ Oversee warhead design and integration activities over multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, requirements, nuclear safety, use contol, quality, and assembly)
+ Provide technical guidance on critical design elements and chair engineering review boards
+ Manage the design definition of the WR System, including ensuring proper design implementation and derivation of requirements to components and subsystems to support customer and system-level requirements
+ Collaborate with Lead Engineers at partner agencies, including LLNL, KCNSC, PX, NNSA, and other sites.
+ Coordinate with the Qualification Team to ensure qualification activities will provide enough evidence to prove the warhead design meets requirements.
+ Lead system design reviews, including the System Baseline Design Review (BDR), Final Design Review (FDR), and other system-level reviews.
+ Provide technical briefings to Sandias executive management, DoD, NNSA, defense contractors, and/or other NNSA sites
+ Provide Earn Value Management status reporting for all System Engineering scope
+ Lead design or cost trade studies
+ Represent the program while collaborating regularly with partners at Sandia, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprise, and Department of Defense organizations.


Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field, plus 7 or more years of experience; or Masters degree plus 5 or more years of experience; or PhD plus 3 or more years of experience; or equivalent engineering and scientific experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform independent research and development.

Experience working in a nuclear weapon system or component group

Experience leading teams

Ability to travel up to 25%.

Currently holding an active security clearance; DOE Q


Experience working on a nuclear weapon modernization program

Experience with development of specifications for components and systems

Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling
