We have an opening for a Weapons Infrastructure Electrical Engineer. You will plan, manage, and execute equipment recapitalization installation and facility modification projects to support weapons infrastructure. The infrastructure projects are needed to support capabilities such as the nuclear weapons program in high explosives, warhead test and evaluation, physics performance evaluation, and science, technology and engineering. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Provide subject matter expertise on the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Prepare and implement electrical designs to support installation of programmatic equipment utilizing Program provided design criteria, requirements, estimates, calculations, schematics, red-line sketches, construction as-built documents, procedures, and specifications.
  • Partner with programmatic equipment Project Managers to review Program Equipment requirements and determine electrical utility loads and design safety features required to facilitate installation.
  • Determine functional electrical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems. Perform advanced electrical engineering calculations for short-circuit analysis of facility power distribution systems and arc flash safety analysis as needed.
  • Provide electrical engineering support during construction performed by outside contractors including reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, resolving field problems, and performing inspections.
  • Lead multiple complex internal electrical projects with responsibility for the development and compliance with technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables. Direct the work of electrical designers and drafters in preparing models and drawings using AutoCAD for projects.
  • Participate in weapons design reviews to obtain approvals for project scope and designs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

  • Lead highly complex internal and external multidisciplinary engineering projects as the Project Lead or Design Manager with overall responsibility for developing technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Become a LLNL Electrical Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and support multiple projects in this role.
  • Provide leadership and mentor junior staff members.

 


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Professional Engineer registration in the State of California.
  • Significant experience in design and engineering work related to programmatic equipment, including but not limited to machine tools, lathes, ovens, presses, and the application of electrical system components such as transformers, motor control centers, automatic transfer switches, uninterrupted power sources, lighting, and grounding systems. 
  • Significant experience preparing load studies, branch circuit and short circuit analysis, and arc flash calculations.
  • Advanced knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and National and California Electrical Codes. Knowledge of electrical safety standards such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, National Electrical Manufacturers Association, and International Electrical Testing Association. Experience with electrical safety issues associated with NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, etc.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, projects, and priorities. Ability to meet demanding deadlines and schedules.
  • Significant experience generating correspondence, reports, calculations, and presentations using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applicable software, along with experience with AutoCAD in the preparation of working drawings.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical or operational information, provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders. Significant experience interacting effectively with all levels of technical staff, program stakeholders, managers, and vendors.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level

  • Substantial expertise in programmatic equipment electrical engineering including design and installation.
  • Subject matter expertise with electrical codes and certification compliance with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Substantial experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems and in providing technical leadership for highly complex projects requiring detailed planning, scheduling, and budget management.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior staff members.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and understanding of system engineering principles and practices.
  • Technical expertise in power distribution, electrical infrastructure, design, development, construction, and operations.
  • Experience with commercial and/or industrial control systems, Automated Logic Corporation (ALC) systems and infrastructure for building automation systems, mechanical system testing, balancing, and commissioning. Knowledge of energy efficiency technologies and practices.
  • Experience as an Electrical Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Experience using AutoCAD, REVIT, MicroStation, Pro E/CREO, and/or Intergraph PDS drawing applications.
