We have multiple openings for a Weapons Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer. You will plan, manage, and execute infrastructure recapitalization projects to support capabilities in high explosives, warhead test and evaluation, special nuclear materials, engineering fabrication and inspection, environmental testing, physics performance and evaluation, and other critical stockpile infrastructure. The infrastructure projects are tied to capability delivery to support LEP experimental, test, and evaluation development schedules for the W80-4 LEP and the W78 replacement projects. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Develop requirements, designs, project scope, costs, schedule, and risk plan to field and execute projects focused on special facilities and programmatic equipment such as ultraprecision machine tools or inspection, coordinate measuring machines, off the shelf equipment such as thermal ovens or environmental chambers for high explosives and/or unique custom program equipment that requires collaborating with SMEs to first write statements of work, and their integration with real property (facility).
- Develop and implement rigorous project management methods and tools to ensure successful execution of special equipment and infrastructure projects.
- Review, write, and develop technical specifications and drawings.
- Prepare supporting health and safety documentation that is aligned with the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) requirement and participate in design and Management Prestart Reviews.
- Collaborate with mission support organizations in Operations and Business (O&B), Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H), and Science, Technology and Engineering (ST&E) to direct successful project execution.
- Lead a team of specialists consisting of supply chain management (procurement), facility operations, Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H), Weapons Program, and technical subject matter experts (SME).
- Apply advanced technical knowledge and methodologies to guide successful completion of project and organizational goals and serve as primary technical contact on various tasks and projects.
- Manage highly complex multidisciplinary design projects performed by outside engineering firms subcontracted to perform engineering design services to supplement internal engineering capability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Lead highly complex internal multidisciplinary engineering projects as the Project Lead or Design Manager with overall responsibility for developing technical criteria, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
- Provide subject matter expertise in conventional facility mechanical engineering design, the California Mechancial and Plumbing Codes, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
- Provide leadership and mentor junior staff members.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Professional registration as a Mechanical Engineer.
- Advanced knowledge of hardware design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
- Significant experience effectively managing projects and ability to organize and conduct rigorous design and project reviews.
- Ability to devise solutions for complex technical requirements.
- Ability to take initiative to develop innovative solutions for successful project execution.
- Ability to effectively manage (organize, direct, and monitor schedule and budgets) multiple projects concurrently and to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.
- Significant experience interacting effectively with all levels of technical staff, program stakeholders, managers, and vendors.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical or operational information and provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Substantial experience and subject matter expertise in special equipment mechanical engineering and Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification compliance.
- Substantial experience developing and implementing creative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems and in providing technical leadership for highly complex projects requiring detailed planning, scheduling, and budget management. Ability to lead and mentor junior staff members.
- Substantial experience delivering infrastructure to support technical capabilities integrating both scientific equipment and facilities modernization.

Desired Qualifications
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and understanding of system engineering principles and practices. Professional Engineer registration in the State of California.
- Experience using AutoCAD, REVIT, Microstation, ProE/CREO, or Intergraph PDS drawing applications.
- Design specialized mechanical systems for cleanroom and high explosive (HE) facilities such as dust collection systems, HEPA filtration, and other specialized systems along with experience with commercial and/or industrial control systems, Automated Logic Corporation (ALC) systems, and infrastructure for building automation systems, mechanical system testing, balancing, commissioning, and knowledge of energy efficiency technologies and practices.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
