Web Editor/Content Strategist

We have an opening for a Web Editor/Content Strategist in the Program Support Services Division in support of the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF & PS) Directorate. In this role, you will be responsible for developing original content and maintaining existing content across multiple websites, for both internal and external audiences. You will regularly collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of Communications Specialists, Graphic Artists, Photographers, and Web Master to deliver quality communications products in support of highly scientific and technical functional areas. This position will be in the Technical Information Department (TID), matrixed to the NIF & PS Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the G04.2 or G04.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Partner with subject matter experts and senior leaders to plan new or revised websites, including recommendations to site structure and content organization and guide content development for new pages and/or sites.
  • Perform basic HTML editing using text editors and content management systems such as Dreamweaver, Drupal, Liferay, and WordPress.
  • Collaborate with web designers and front-end developers to suggest and/or execute page layout for new pages, sites and/or site interactions and functionality.
  • Effectively execute moderate to highly complex projects, delivering products on time and with a high degree of quality.
  • Direct all aspects of web-based publishing for projects of moderate scope, from concept through scheduling, writing, editing, review, production, and web publishing; adhere to style guides and standards of quality for communication products.
  • Write, rewrite, and/or edit complex technical and possibly sensitive information into clear, direct, and engaging web copy, appropriate for the targeted audience(s).
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

In addition, at the G04.3 level

  • Establish commitments on large, complex communication products and manage competing project schedules, track production costs, and coordinate the work of others.
  • Provide appropriate recommendations for content style, test electronic materials on appropriate platforms using appropriate software and determine hierarchy for complex, multilayered sites.
  • Provide insight on the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, and processes; assist in the development of metrics and process improvement methods; may represent organization on working groups or committees.
  • In collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, manage complex projects, establishing timelines, scope, and cost, delegate and oversee tasks, liaison with customers and other functional areas, executing products on schedule and to a high degree of quality.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Engineering or Scientific discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience planning, developing, organizing, and writing content effectively, in order to convey both substance and intent with accuracy across digital platforms.
  • Experience writing and editing complex scientific and/or technical subject matter.
  • Ability to effectively lead communications projects and coordinate with other communications disciplines.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of editorial standards, technical language, and effective web communication/language, usage, and style conventions.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Excellent customer service skills and advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and flexible, including effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Experience with content management systems (particularly Drupal), CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and Bootstrap; knowledge of web accessibility standards, including W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Revised 508 Standards; experience conducting usability testing.

In addition, at the G04.3 level

  • Significant experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups, including establishing team commitments of scope, cost, schedule, and quality.
  • Experience collaborating with and effectively communicating with all levels of staff, including senior managers, to meet organizational/programmatic objectives.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards including experience writing or modifying HTML with Dreamweaver or similar html editor tools.

Qualifications we desire

  • Extensive knowledge of Drupal UI configurations such as creation of content types, views, and complex webforms to enable accurate and accessible display of technical content.
  • Experience in Marketing/branding and/or social media.
  • Experience editing/writing in multiple scientific or technical areas.
